Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
