Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
